Jamie Spaers, who is the father of pop singer Britney, has been representing his daughter in a court case in which she is charged with driving without a valid Californian licence.

The case revolves around an incident reported to have taken place in Los Angeles back in August of last year when Britney Spears was seen hitting her vehicle into a parked car and then leaving the scene of her crime. A photographer captured evidence of this.

Jamie Spears and Britney Spears26-year-old Spears had initially been charged with hit-and-run but these charges were dropped last October after compensation was paid to the driver of the damaged car.

The singer said she intended moving to her home state of Louisiana and therefore did not require a Californian driving licence. Because of this not attending the court was within her rights.

The prosecution, however, claimed that it was straightforward because her address was down as Beverley Hills, and therefore she did need to have a valid driving licence for California.

Spears’ lawyer, J Michael Flanagan, stated that it was agreed that his client had been driving at the time but maintained that her Louisiana driving licence, which she then had was valid because she was only a temporary resident in the area.

Jamie Spears said that his daughter was going to move back to Louisiana at the time of the incident but didn’t because the custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline meant she was needed in California.

Spears could face jail if she is found guilty as charged although it is not thought likely that she would receive such a sentence.
